Believers have the privilege of knowing God in many different ways. He’s our refuge, companion, helper, rescuer, and provider, just to name a few. We might experience him more as our comforter during seasons of suffering. In seasons of growing, we may know him more as our teacher. While I enjoy getting to know him in new ways, there is one identity of his that I’ve come to appreciate most – God as father.
I see many parallels that exist between my own parenting during the last sixteen years and God’s parenting of me. Knowing how I feel about my children has given me a deeper understanding of how my heavenly father feels about his children.
I’m certainly not suggesting that believers can only appreciate God as father if they are parents. I am saying that being a parent brings a unique sweetness to how we relate to and understand God as father.
